Race

During the super bowl, Pepsi Max aired a commercial where a wife was upset with her husband for his eating habits. She disliked, and changed, everything he consumed. Finally she agreed with one choice, Pepsi Max, but when he noticed a pretty girl, she threw her can at her husband, he ducked, the can hit the girl, knocked her out and the couple left apologizing.

I found it funny, a little on the dark side, but funny. I saw it as a spot on how women misunderstand men and how they want them to be different. For the past few days, radio talk shows have been talking about the fact that it was a black woman hitting a white woman. A public official from Texas is offended (I don't remember who she is, nor do I care).

I can honestly say I was surprised, in my initial recollection, I couldn't have told you the couple was black. It was a simple play on women's misunderstanding of men in a humorous way.

I realize no one will see my little blog post, but for anyone who's counting, I saw no color in this ad.

  1. This kind of non-controversy controversy always makes me wonder how the offended party sees the world. It is my humble opinion that only those "concerned" with color can put motive or feeling behind color - as though a person has any control over the hue of their skin tone. Such people, I've found, say stupid things like, "You sound like a white guy" or "You dress like a black guy"... To which I can only shake my head and wonder...

  3. You know, I couldn't have told you either the color or anyone's skin in that commercial. Not something that stuck in my mind. I agree, Jerry. It reminded me of my mother-in-law who's put her hubby on the cabbage soup diet more than once while he stashes a 2-pound bag of peanut M&Ms in his car.
